Later this year, from the 13th until the 20th of October, 50 solar cars from around the world will race against each other through the Australian Outback in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. The Agoria Solar Team, consisting of 20 engineering students from the KU Leuven university, will once again be competing in this event. This year, their eyes are on the coveted first place as they aim to do even better than their predecessors who won third prize in 2017.

The Agoria Solar Team has now just 3 months left to finish building the very best solar car. In the months leading up to the race, they will be testing and optimizing the car. To be able to cover the 3,021 km from Darwin to Adelaide at top speed, the team will have to push many new technologies to the limit. As a global company that delivers advanced ICT solutions and services, delaware is well placed to support the enthusiastic students in their search for innovative solutions. More specifically, in the role of Innovation Partner, delaware will help them to explore artificial intelligence as a way of better analyzing the data captured by the car sensors. They can then use those insights to optimize the driving performance and hence further increase the chances of finishing first.

A perfect match

delaware is proud to become the Innovation Partner of the Agoria Solar Team, not least because the Agoria Solar Team’s and delaware’s values are perfectly matched. For example, the Agoria Solar Team places paramount importance on sustainability and actively promotes renewable energy. Sustainability and the desire to create a greener future are also part of delaware’s own DNA and some of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Patrick Andersen, Managing Partner of delaware: “delaware originates from a dream of founding an organization that lasts. Our whole business model is built around this long-term mindset and the eagerness to pass our business down through the next generations. We will only be able to realize our dream, however, if our planet has a future too.”

To build the best solar car, the students are raising funds to buy components, pay for travel, purchase tools, set up marketing campaigns and so on. They are experiencing first-hand what it means to work on a difficult project from scratch and to act as an entrepreneur to achieve the set goals. With entrepreneurship as one of its main values, delaware applauds this. As part of the partnership, the students can draw on delaware’s extensive project management experience as a consulting firm to help make their project a success.

The Agoria Solar Team is also sharing its experiences with other high school and university students, for instance by organizing the ‘Solar Olympics’ together with its partners. This event challenges students at all Flemish secondary schools to develop a solar-powered miniature vehicle or gadget. delaware is delighted to be contributing to this initiative that invests in the next generation.

Joining forces for more success

William-Jan Claes, engineering student and team manager of the Agoria Solar Team, is very positive about the partnership: “It’s beneficial to experience the enthusiasm of the people from delaware to make our shared journey a success. delaware’s AI platform will give us tremendous leverage and will hopefully help the Agoria Solar Team to achieve an outstanding result in Australia.”
