What do you like most about your job?

Jul 12, 2015

‘What do you like most about your job?’ sounds like a plain question. But can you answer it immediately?

Although I love my job, I can’t.

Let’s take a step back and first ask yourself: ‘What do I love doing as a person?’. Me, I like interacting with people. And according to Maslow, (an American psychologist who’s best known for his pyramid of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization), everybody has the need to do so. But next to my social life, I’m happy that my job allows me to put that into practice. As an HR Officer in recruitment and selection, I communicate with both people inside and outside the organization.

And that’s one thing that I love about my job.

I also enjoy helping people. In my job that means i.e. helping candidates to find a job that really fits their personal interests and their job expectations. Or helping a Delaware Consulting team to find a new colleague that really fits the group. Maslow’s need for Esteem? Check!

But what do my colleagues think about their job? After all (for some of them), I had my share in their choice for a job at Delaware Consulting…

What do the #peopleofdelaware like most about their job?

Heleen – Functional Analyst | SAP Sales & Distribution

“What I like about my job, next to its need for team spirit and close collaboration with people, is the analytical aspect. For every new project, you have to dig into the company and figure out the as-is and to-be processes.”

Christian – Creative Designer | Marketing

“Creative freedom. I like to brainstorm and think out of the box for my concepts. My job can be very challenging at times, but then again, it pushes me and my senses to full potential.”

Sven – SAP CRM Consultant | Customer Experience

“I like the ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality in my job. Passion and commitment are important. However, once in a while it’s also great to blow off some steam. Within Delaware Consulting this mentality is shared and nobody runs from a party.”

Magali – SAP SD Consultant | SAP Logistics

“My job is like doing sports and training towards a specific goal. Each week, you train together with your colleagues, which is represented in discovering/investigating new things and a steep learning curve. You need to use all your power of will and capabilities to commit during a project and to achieve a successful go-live at the end.”

Simon – MS xRM Consultant | Customer Experience

“My job offers a wide variety of opportunities. This brings varied work and challenging projects. But a strong and cohesive team makes it possible to tackle each challenge.”

Adil – Service Desk | AMS

“I’m a very curious person and I like to understand how things work or how come things are the way they are. I have the same mindset when I’m assigned an issue. All the possibilities need to be considered. Working with people who are as curious as I am, and that are more skilled, makes my work the best learning environment there is. Every day I learn something new on the job.”

Frederik-Jan – SAP Integration Consultant | SAP Netweaver

“Working in a technical team you would think that my job is limited to concentrated knowledge in various specific domains and practices. While the projects I do for Delaware Consulting are technical in nature, they have given me a huge insight in functional domains, broadening my general knowledge of things like finance, logistics, production, …”

Els – .NET Developer | Delaware Digital

“I’m constantly surrounded by people with a vast amount of knowledge. The Delaware Consulting mentality is to spread that knowledge as much as possible, so there is always someone who will help you. Hence, even though we are all working on different projects, it still feels like we are one big team creating many innovative, top-notch products.”

“Also, while it is great that we get to start new projects and watch them grow, I’m glad we don’t have to work on one product for the rest of our careers. We get to move on to new projects where we can use the experience from previous projects to our advantage, while still learning more in a new environment. No two projects are the same, so boredom is not a word we comprehend.”

One more thing

I’m not that surprised to see that almost all our colleagues refer to teamwork, commitment and care, which are, not coincidentally, Delaware Consulting values. Also ‘knowledge sharing’ is frequently mentioned.

I like to add one more myself. I’m offered the opportunity to work flexible hours. The fact that my employer focuses on results instead of hours and/or exact location makes it able to retain a good work-life balance. Add the fact that we’re all working in a stable and healthy company (≈security) and I can tell you that we beat Maslow’s pyramid :).
